Creative solution for dealing with hardwood flooring issue?

I have dark red oak floors in dining room. But I want light oak floors (red oak natural) in adjacent kitchen because of the maintenance issues with dark floors I'm moving into my senior years and don't want to be constantly dealing with the floor!. Beyond kitchen is great room where I want same light oak floors. Is there a creative way to make the transition?

Since you are already doing all that work, how about sanding down the dining room and refinishing it lighter, as you will have in the great room?
