Do LED under cabinet lights require a recessed area under the cabinet?

They do require some recessed area if you don't want the light source to show. -Nissa

We have a line of under cabinet lights that are very low profile (less than 0.55" thick) and will hide behind the lip of almost any cabinet front. If you wanted to use clips to angle the lights it would be at most 0.65" - so not very much but yes, you will need some recessed area.

An alternative would be light discs that are less than 0.375" high and come in 4 different finish options. Slightly more expensive but could be used if you didn't have a recessed cabinet.

Pegasus Lighting
LED is actually the best option for under cabinet lighting if you're looking for something incredibly low-profile. A single light emitting diode is incredibly small, and multiple LEDs can incorporated into a miniature light fixture - they don't require the bulky fixture design of, say, and incandescent light bulb.

Look for LED light bars or light strips if you don't have much of a recessed area. Here's one that might work for your space - check out the video in the product description:
