We are remodeling kitchen with hug island desired. To save space I am wondering if we could add a large round end to the island so my family of five could sit comfortably and have this serve as our main cozy family dining area. Chairs must be comfortable. (FYI: we will have larger table for 12-14 or so when guests are here b/c we like to entertain. Goal is not to have two tables - one for company and one when it is just us. We don't want to sit our family of 5 at a large table when it is only just us.
michigammemom The round, dinette ended island has a modular look that brings to mind an 80's kitchen.
I also prefer not to be seated in a counter height chair to dine. If you have the space, you might consider an island design similar to this inspiration room.
karen paul interiors Your large round end for seating five will not work out as your island would have to be a width almost unwieldly. Most islands will seat 3 to 4 and round ends will seat generally 3 to 4, maximum. This layout I am posting is perhaps the most useful in terms of work space for you and for seating of family of 5.
Marie Hebson's interiorsBYDESIGN Inc. Hi chuckgschwend, Marie here. for me to decipher whether your island would work, I'd need to see your space plan of the kitchen dining area, with the current size of the island. I definitely see this working if its feasible for you to add a banquette. But, I can't recommend without seeing pictures of the space and a floor plan - thanks!
We were thinking of making the sides a little longer (to accomodate 2 chairs on each side and also 2 on the curve - an extra seat for a friend). We also have a large dining table for our guests so we hope this large island will work as an awesome serving area. We usually have to serve quite a bit of food for the entire gang and our regular dining buffet just isn't big enough. Also, although we would like something table height we decided that we need something high enough so that little ones can't reach anything hot. Good luck!
