Short of taking my house down to the studs and replacing the drywall, is there another solution to minimizing the heavy textured surface on the walls? i.e. sanding, skim coating the surface to be more smooth? Thanks.
loriswanson My entire house had a heavy texture on the walls when we bought it, and over time I was able to get the walls smooth. I started by taking a 6" mudding knife and scraping all of the highest areas down. It was very messy and hard to do, but it made the rest of the process much easier. Then I skim coated the walls with 2 coats, sanding in between coats. After the second coat was sanded, they were very smooth. I'm not a professional, but was able to get them almost perfectly smooth so no one could tell they weren't regular drywall to begin with. It's time consuming and very messy (cover your floors and seal off any rooms you don't want the dust to get into!) but well worth it! Good luck!
