Need ideas for replacing/renovating formica/oak cabinet doors/drawer fronts

DK WelshJuly 10, 2012
They were hugely popular in the 80s - almond-colored Formica with oak strips routed as 'handles'. We don't want to replace the cabinets (all almond-colored Formica), because they are still rock-solid. But the doors make them so dated. We are considering stripping and staining the wood strip a dark grey. Has anyone done anything else to these cabinets to update them?

Hi there, I've actually seen mentioned on here several times from people that were really happy with the effects. Might be worth a try!

A photo might help. Check out link below and also Google "old formica cabinets". I'm not sure about painting the knobs gray. What color are your floors? Counters? Appliances? The handles should coordinate.

Have you considered just buying new doors and drawer fronts for the existing boxes?

new doors is always a good idea, but if you have the time to refinish the old ones, make sure they are sound and sand, sand, sand!

I just posted on this. I painted my golden oak cabinets and I think they turned out great. No stripping or sanding! The paint is called Breakthough paint by PPG. It can be mixed in any color. We actually tried it first on a bathroom vanity and were happy with the results we just kept painting. (trim, 6 panel doors, kitchen cabinets) It runs about 45 dollars a gallon. The paints is very easy to use.

Depends on budget. I would have the doors laminated with stainless steel over the Almond Plam, then spray paint the wood strip a color that can bring the color scheme together with rest of kitchen.

Sometimes paining the oak piece to match the formica can update the look a bit along with new door pulls.
