Cupboards

I've seen this in many[most] home pictures I've looked at for american/canadian/europian homes. Why doesn't the cupboard reach all the way to the ceilings? Why is there a space please? Is there a specifric reason behind it, as I see it in all rooms, even kitchens as well.

Mariska, that's a good question! There is the option to bring it the whole way to the ceiling, it's a choice of preference. Most ceilings that we build are about 9ft, bringing a built-in up that high is a little unpractical because the shelving on the inside would be hard to reach. Some builders and home owners don't think it looks as nice when it's not touching the ceiling (again, choice of preference).

This unit in particular is lined up to match the bathroom vanity across the room.

Hope this helps!

But, my biggest "concern" is how do they clean up there? Surely that space attracts dust and other stuff, no?

We understand the concern, for our customers who feel the same way we build a soffit over the unit. Here is a link to our Facebook album from the same house this photo is from.

From a Norwegian kitchen cabinet provider's view: I find it difficult to install cupboards all the way to the ceiling if the customer wants to keep existing mouldings in the ceilings. Where the crown mouldings on the cabinet meets the mouldings it can be hard to make it look good. The best way I find, if it is possible, is to build the cabinets straight up to the ceiling without crown mouldings and then use the ceilings mouldings on the outside so it looks like it is part of the wall.
