Large walls require big art or a grouping of art. The first picture below shows both. The second photo shows a grouping of 3 pieces. You could start with one or two pieces and grow your collection. I prefer not to place family photos in the living room. Where i do think it's fun to have a gallery of family pictures is in the powder room where you have a captive audience to enjoy them.

Personally, I would go for either one large horizontal painting or, alternately, a group of three related prints or paintings, with different images but identical frames, hung in a horizontal row.

I see Carolyn posted some great suggestions while I was typing mine. I really like her grouping of three vertical paintings that, together, function as a horizontal unit.
