What to do with this space? Layout, Trim, Paint color
This is the family room in our new house, so the furniture isn't ours. Our family room was smaller, so we may have to bring in other furniture. One thing that will definitely go into this room is a 3-section couch with a chaise on the left third. Trying to plan how to lay the room out. A TV area and a conversation area? A game table? Just one large TV watching space?
Also wondering if we should paint the woodwork. I think this was an addition and the rest of the trim in the house is white.
Furniture colors are mostly beige, sage, and a brownish red. I'd like the space to feel comfortable but not cave-like. Color for walls? Ceiling suggestions?
scaplan I think the hard part will be in working with your left chaise. If you want it to be any different that how the previous owners had it, you would need a different couch. What I see for this room is the seating facing the wall with the hanging art and have that wall be for the television. I'm not sure why people put televisions over fireplaces, as it is very uncomfortable to watch.
As for how to use the room, that would be for you to answer really. Do you want or would you use two seating areas and a game table? That is a better place to start as it's hard to design a room without a stated purpose.
olldbobbi If it were me.....I would put the TV where the black dresser (?) is, then angle your 3 section couch to take advantage of both the fireplace and the TV.
I would paint the baseboards white but leave the beautiful door casing as they are, assuming their stained wood?
Sage on the walls with either a lighter sage on the ceiling, or just plain white.
lefty47 HI -- I would love this room for myself so I am going to say -- If this was my place ,--- I would make all the trim in the house the same, but only some of it. I would leave the inside window frames and grilles what they are now or even painted black, and I would leave or paint the mantel black too. There is such great volume in the room and I think the ceiling is perfect for some beams. Picture some post and beam ones or how about some reclaimed barn beams , it would look great ! I wouldn't put your TV over the fireplace . Put it on the right wall on a swivel arm , then a large long console under for all the TV trappings and stuff. Then have a long sofa facing from the left side of the fireplace and ottomans for each end and some swivel chairs facing the sofa that can turn for TV watching.Put a tall mirror ( leaning kind ) attatched to the wall above the fireplace or a big painting or art object, something interesting, then matching floor lamps on each side.Because the room is large ,please don't fill corners with fake trees or anything like that . I think that looks so show home and cheap. Drapes on the windows up to the ceiling height with the others the same. You could also have blinds under. If you keep the trims then you have to cut the contrast with a darker toned wall color. You also don't have to keep the ceiling white. I always like vaulted rooms all in one color, ceilings and walls. Hope this helps !!!
Chroma Design Yes, paint the trim white. Do that as soon as you get the place. Then wait on the walls.
What you need to do is figure out how you will use this room. The current set up from the previous owners is geared towards only one thing.... Television. I see you have two idea books geared towards children, one boy, one girl. So, I'll assume you have young children. They need play space, toy storage, maybe a craft and puzzle table. Figure out the many roles your room will serve, and the amount of space and priority each has. Then work your layout to accommodate that. Your tv can go anywhere. Once you know placement, size and type of furniture will be easier to define.
Select your wall color after you have purchased your new furniture. You have a color story in mind (beige, sage, brownish red) so have that as a plan as you shop. Once everything is in place, a wall color will be easier to figure out.
Don't be in a hurry, living in the space a bit it help you discover how you will need the room to function.

Is the trim stained or painted?

White trim will really bring the room to a modern place. Do. Build in of shelves and tv around the fireplace. Is a beautiful room.
