Love this look but how are you keeping the steel from rusting away?

We used a similar detail at our Boat Bay House:
. What we did was to use weathering Corten steel. The rust layer on Corten forms a protective coating and greatly reduces the long term corrosion of the material. You can find out some info about it on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weathering_steel. Pay attention to the section regarding staining and continuing corrosion if the material remains in constant contact with water. I also believe that the runoff from Corten is corrosive to aluminum. Nonetheless, it's a great material when used properly, developing a beautiful patina over time.

That is a great explanation above. In addition we use a heavy gauge of steel.

What thickness of steel are you using? 1/4", 3/8", 1/2"?

I don't remember what we used on our project. If I had to guess, I'd say it as 1/8" or 3/16"
