In the process of remodeling. The floor is a porcelain bamboo with a onyx grout. The walls are painted canvas tan. Ceiling fan has been replaced. This room is open from the kitchen which has a travertine tile and dark brown cabinets. I really want a more contemporary look. Any suggestions would be appreciated

If contemporary is the look you are going for, you really need to either paint the mantle to blend in and not be so obvious, or replace it and do something with stone like some of the above picture posts. Paint the walls surrounding the fireplace a bold brown or grey color (depending on what your fan looks like) and possibly paint the brick or replace it. Also, if you can, replace the face of your fireplace. I'd keep it black to help it look visually larger and not obvious.

If contemporary is what you are hoping to achieve the oak surround and brick hearth should be eliminated for a fresh start. I love the horizontal and vertical tile applications in this modern fireplace.

HI -- for a more modern look then changing the fireplace is the answer BUT you didn't say if you wanted to change the floors which I love by the way. The fireplace that you have now is very traditional so that can be changed to something modern. I like the one in the last picture that Halo Stone Designs posted . Or you could just stone or tile that whole end wall , that would be awsome .

Go to www.foreverstone.biz. When we moved into our house my wife did not like the mantle so we ripped it out. We then put Blue Pear Split Stone around the fire place and then used an old beam from a house that was gutted as a mantle. That means everything we used was recycled.
