1960s home in need of facelift...and I have no idea where to start!

My parents' home was built in the 1960s (I think). The bottom half is made of different colors and shapes of sandstone, which is tolerable. The roof is a beige-y gray, which is not in the budget to be changed.

The main part that they want to change is upper part of the house which is made of this textured shingle material. The facelift can't be too expensive...a simple paint job is not going to be enough...it needs to be removed or covered. I would like to keep the traditional look. Any ideas?

However, I would like opinions on the color for the upper part, as well as the columns, garage doors, picture window and other window trim, etc.

Any help, especially pictures, would be greatly appreciated!
