Trying to find a similar stencil or ideas for custom-making one
A couple of weeks ago, I found a wall stencil that was similar to the design on this duvet cover. (I thought I had bookmarked the site.) I use a fireplace mantel as my bed headboard and would like to stencil something like this giant flower above the mantelpiece. Any suggestions/thoughts on finding one similar or making a custom stencil that's not too expensive? (Or even finding a similar wall decal/sticker?) The idea is to make the bedroom a bit more glamorous without spending too much money. (My place is a rental.) http://www.target.com/p/gardenia-duvet-cover-set/-/A-11340192#prodSlot=large_1_4
bklyndanielle Thanks for posting, Emily. I'm not seeing exactly what I'm looking for on Etsy. Do you know of other good sites? Also, do you know of any downsides to purchasing a decal/sticker (which sounds easier than a stencil)? Thanks, again.
TanCalGal I wouldn't do a decal or stencil with the floral duvet / shams. You already have a floral in the room...you do not need another floral. The 2-3 florals will not enhance one another. For a throw pillow on the bed choose a stripe in some or all of the colors in the duvet. For over the bed, choose something like a sunburst (this one sort of repeats the polka dots).
bklyndanielle I don't have any florals in the room. The above-photo is to show people here the kind of flower stencil I am looking for. I do not have this duvet. Thanks.
Bella-Systems Philly I used to be a decorative painter. Go to modellodesigns.com. It has custom stencils. They are adhesive stencils and hundreds of styles to pick from.
mollythecollie I like the Hawaiian Gardenia on Amazon. It comes in many different sizes. Also when on amazon search for floral wall decals. You can then narrow it down by clicking on the differnt colors on the top left hand side. I did a search using bing for gardenia decal and there are several that pop up. I also tried gardenia stencil. hope this helps.
bklyndanielle This is my first question posted here - you guys are very helpful, thanks! Groveraxle, the allposters link has a very pretty poppy design and your suggestion re the framed poppy is different and pretty. I may consider that as it's movable if/when I leave here and certainly is "no muss/no fuss".
Modello and Dressler don't seem to have flowers, though I could get a quote on a custom stencil (which sounds expensive). I could not find the Hawaiian Gardenia on Amazon.
I think I may have seen a "link-to-a-link" on RetroRenovation.com so I may go back to that website to see if I can find the gardenia, again.
bklyndanielle P.S. The space above my mantle is 60"w x 51"h. While I don't want to fill the entire space, I think the allposter poppies are going to be too small for the space. ;-(
bklyndanielle @molly - thanks for the links. I had seen the first one but don't think the colors are right for my room. My room is very light blue with white ceilling and white molding. I think I need a fuschia and black decal or something more bold if I want my room to be more glamorous (right now, my room is very casual and a little 'beach-y". I liked the purple orchid better but it seems more lavender than purple and, again, I think I need a bold color to contrast with the light blue. I am checking "wallmonkeys" on amazon - thanks for that tip!
bklyndanielle P.S. This is my first time posting on Houzz - I assume I should post a new thread with regard to changing out the overhead light fixture in my bedroom. However, I thought I'd mention this to you great folks in case you can think of anything. I would like to get something clean, modern and a bit glam - like a cheaper version of this: http://pelledesigns.bigcartel.com/product/original-bubble-chandelier I think I read on some diy site that someone made their own version very cheaply but I think that would be beyond my skills at this point. I will make a new post. Thanks, again!
portpiro Ikea have some interesting light fittings that make a statement and are under $100. As for your print, could you take a colour picture with a good camera and get it enlarged? Buy a large black frame with white mount also cheap at Ikea and frame it. Voila!
bklyndanielle @portpiro, thanks for your suggestions! I was IKEA 2 weeks ago and, unfortunately, didn't see any light fixtures that interested me for my bedroom. Also, I love your idea about enlarging a photo of the print, above but, since I'm pretty bad at DIY (though hopefully I wll get better at it), I would probably buy the IKEA poppy print that @groveraxle suggested since it's somewhat similar and already framed. Thanks for taking the time to post - I appreciate it!
4wksnwks I bought this exact duvet and wanted the graphic on the wall. We ended up adhering the fabric directly to the wall using starch (internet tutorials for that process abound.) I loved the subtle texture it added to the wall in addition to the art. You can also use stock molding to frame it out, especially if you cut the fabric. Another trick is to use a overhead projector that you can find at craft stores and paint an image where you want it. With the amount of detail in this and subtle variations in color, I think you'd have to be pretty artistic to pull this picture off, but that method does allow you to change the size. Good luck!
4wksnwks I just reread your post. If you're renting, you wouldn't want to paint something that bright directly on the wall, of course. :) My husband is in the military,so we've done our fair share of moving around and renting. I learned the starching trick from another military mom. It was my first attempt at a DIY-type project and it was super easy. If you do make a mistake like getting it crooked, all you need is a sponge. Plus, when you move, you just peel the fabric right off the wall and gently wipe the wall down. Be sure to wash and dry the fabric before you put it up so that the fabric dyes don't transfer to the wall. (Learned that one the hard way when I created a navy blue accent wall behind our bed. We had to repaint.)
bklyndanielle @4wksnwks - apologies for the belated reply. Thank you for your posts. That's so interesting what you did with the actual duvet, using the fabric and attaching to the wall. This is in my top 3 choices. (I would have to frame it, though, as it's white and I live in NYC where the air is dirty.)
I was antiquing today and bought this scarf with a flower pattern ($8) and then went to a frame store to see what it would cost to professionally stretch and frame out the scarf (something like $75 w/frame and labor - I could probably figure out how to do this). I'm not sold on using this scarf (it doesn't pop like a fuschia color might) but I think it could work. If you have suggestions for a frame color or decorative stencils on either side of this scarf, I'm all ears. (I can always re-paint before I move out.) Thanks, again!
bklyndanielle @j222b - thanks for the link and the DIY instructions! I still think it's beyond my capabilities but I could always get someone on TaskRabbit to do this cheaper than buying it pre-made.
TanCalGal I'd make a template of the scarf out of newspaper and try it on various parts of the upper mantel area. Probably centered and up a little higher. Eventually I'd hang the scarf with 3 thumbtacks (black). I'd place the "orange doll in glass" in the center of the mantel. I'd take all of the mantel art out of the frames and paint all frames black. I'd arrange the black frames with art back in, on each side of the "orange doll". I'd remove the green glass.
PS colors should be repeated in a room. Buy a little throw pillow in black for the bed or maybe in a blue: a little more muted than the scarf's blue.
bklyndanielle I like your suggestions about the Japanese origami figure and the green decanter. However, I like the ecletic nature of different frames and sizes. Thanks!
TanCalGal I like eclectic and I also like a tad funky. This is the type of arrangement you have to play with to get the objects "just right". Also you can put some favorite items away for a while and bring them back when creativity strikes. Here's something you can try. I'd center and lower the scarf. Keep origami & green decanter where they are, but move each a little closer to center. Objects like the frames are best in 1,3,5,7 numbers. Have the tallest frame in center of mantel : resting on the scarf & 2 of the other frames overlapping somewhat the tall frame on each side of the tall frame. Also, the decanter might be interesting with the top off and top resting on the mantel and some tree branches in the decanter. Like this photo, but far fewer branches
bklyndanielle @olldj22 - apologies for the delay in my response. I'm in NYC and the past couple of weeks have been hectic with the aftermath of the hurricane. I rearranged everything per your original suggestion and like it much better than the way I had it. I'm going to leave it like that for a bit and then try your second suggestions directly above. Thank you!
TanCalGal Whenever I need a good idea I click "photo" on Houzz and then enter phrases. I didn't have a good idea for the leaf outline, so I entered "Mantel as headboard" and found these ideas (link below). You will not go wrong copying any of these mantel as headboard ideas. I have often found it's best to copy from these Houzz pages (or decor magazines like Veranda or Arch. Digest) and not follow my own ideas; so I would not use the leaf outlines over the bed-mantel. Note all of the mantel-bed-head boards that I thought were the best, seem to over scale with something very large in the center and then smaller objects are arranged on the sides. Most of them used a large mirror in the center. Maybe you have a large mirror for the center? and then you can arrange the smaller items here & there. A mirror would probably reflect the hanging light you want, too. Over-scaling is a good decorator trick to learn. Many small items are just not that effective in design and one very large item can be very effective. That's why small items are usually grouped together or placed on books: to help make them appear more like very large over-scaled items. http://www.houzz.com/mantel-as-headboard
bklyndanielle @olldj22 - thanks for the tip on how to use houzz - I'm new here. It's so interesting that you mentioned putting a mirror above the mantel. I have a beautiful antique mirror that I bought about 3 months ago that I was going to hang in the living room. I think it would go better in the bedroom. (Only concern - it weighs 37lbs and my wall is plaster. Would have to make sure it would be hung properly and well so that I don't get killed in my sleep!) :-)
TanCalGal Nice mirror. I love antiques/vintage..anything with some history. I live in earthquake country, CA, & have some things over my head and pulled the bed out a bit. Not sure if that's an option 4 U. Maybe you could have the mirror resting on mantel with some nails in mantel holding it + attached to wall. I don't know. A friend bought a light weight mirror with plastic frame and painted the frame with a paint that changes things to rust and it looks very old. I changed my search engine to Bing (better photos, I think) and did a search for your mirror. Here's a similar one? http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=vintage+3+section+mirror+with+etched+&view=detail&id=78F109E6CD5BB18A6BDB29369870E366AF41E33C
greenthumb2 No mirror above the bed. Safety hazard. :=) Unless you have a custom ledge attached to it. Not sure if you know what I mean to say.
For heavy items, often you used to see an interlocking design. A running board (angled ledge) mollied to the wall with an angled male (if you will) and on the back of your antique mirror there's another running board with an angled female. They slip into each other and are very sturdy. Ask landowner if this is OK before installation of mollies.
bklyndanielle @olldj22 - I was in LA for the Northridge quake. Fortunately, there was nothing over my bed then but now I'm a little sensitive to that issue. (I did everything wrong. Just lay in my bed while it moved around the room insteadof standing under a doorframe.) :-)
@grenthumb2 - I met a contractor at the antique place where I bought this mirror. We got to talking and he said he would hang it for me. I could always sk him about "mollies" but am leaning towards my original plan of hanging it in the living room (above the couch where presumably no one will get killed there, either!)
greenthumb2 great idea, but you can still ask to have the mounting as suggested. Mirror in bedroom is bad chi anyway. Or so I have read in the past....creates too much energy. Quakes are weird. By the time we realize what is happening -- we still have to process to move our bodies. lol.
bklyndanielle Wow, I couldn't imagine not having a mirror in the bedroom, especially as I can barely turn around in my NYC-sized bathroom, let alone get ready for my day in there! :-)
Or a big framed poppy from Ikea? http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60208907/

Thanks, again, everyone!

Aslo you can Google: "DIY bubble chandelier" for additional.
