Semi-gloss for a beaded board ceiling or flat paint?

I am putting a beaded board ceiling in my newly renovated kitchen that has 8 foot ceilings (cannot be raised because of bedroom above it.) I thought I should paint it with a white semi-gloss (I did this in a small hallway elsewhere in the house) but my builder thinks it should be flat finish. I don't want to make the ceilings feel lower but am wondering if flat finish will look right on BB. What to do? Any guidelines or advice?

I would suggest a nice compromise with a satin or eggshell finish. I am assuming you are thinking of white?

Yes, white for the ceiling. Good advice, thank you. That will give it something other than the matte finish of flat, but not attract too much attention. Poor old ceiling! ha Thanks for the advice.

Have you thought about doing a soft color on the bead board? Would depend on what you have in the kitchen, but you might want to give it some consideration.

If your starting with raw wood a smi transparent white stain would be classy.
