Need help with a carpeted staircase :o(

I have a carpeted staircase that needs help. Hardwood isnot in the budget. Underneath the carpet is standard builders quality. I am putting in porcelain flooring in the hallway through to the kitchen and would like to know if anyone out there in design land has anything to off er in the way of ideas. Thank you!!

You could paint the stairs and then install a runner.
