Lovely room. Any ideas on how to address similar units on either side of the fireplace

I have a fireplace with a log butner inside, The actual depth of the fireplace is pretty small (most of it is outside) - perhaps 10cm. The hearth is a further 20cm. I am looking to have cupboards and shelves on either side of the fireplace, but the cupboard depth needs to be a minimum 40mm, preferably 50am - but that would mean that the sides would be out further than the fireplace+hearth.
I have useless spatial recognition and am no good at design, so all helpful ideas more than welcome!
