need help with window treatments blinds shades
November 10, 2012 in Design Dilemma
I really need some suggestions for what window treatments would work best in our family room. We love the light we get during the day, but need privacy at night. Can you please send me some ideas for the windows and sliding glass door?

We've looked at some hunter douglass products but i have no idea what color style etc. to choose. Please excuse the messy kids toys in the photos.

Thanks for your input. I love this site.

I don't think you could go wrong with hunter douglas... your best bet might to get a rep from there to come in and show you their options.

If you are not worried about the light in the day, I would go with drapery panels with grommets. I just purchased pairs of drapery panels at home goods for about 24.00 pr. On a metal rod they would open easily. I used to have hunter Douglas blinds, but it was very expensive and I think looked dated quickly plus with small kids you would want the cords up high.

Hunter Douglas or any other blinds with small kids won't last. I think the drapes with grommets is a great idea: they're inexpensive and depending on the fabric can just be thrown in the washer to freshen up after some sticky fingered child grabs them to keep their balance! And pull your couch around to face the fireplace, put the chair on the left of the fireplace, as we're looking at it, to look towards the tv.

I agree with Anne....Grommet panel are perfect and also look great during the day. They really warm up a space as well

You needto get safety decals on all that glass!!

Keep in mind your children will not like their scenic views limited.

I am sure your neighbors are eager to have a decision on the window treatment.

I don't know why Hunter Douglass won't work with children. During the day they will be up and in the evening, when the childen are in bed they'll be down.

But another option is shades. See: Mid-Century Modern Playroom Feldman Architecture Playroom Coastal Den

I would do them in white or go with matchstick blinds. Also, think about painting your ceiling a pale creamy yellow. It will warm up the space. Bonefish Bay

Thanks Jan for the suggestion - we recently moved and this was our sectional from our old apt. Do you think we should mount a tv on the fireplace orndoes that ruin it?

The room and fireplace are lovely

It seems that sticking a TV on the wall is popular and acceptable.

If it pleases you, then hang it over the fp!

However, if it was my choice, I would not.

Our TV is concealed in an entertainment cabinet.

Growing up as a triplet, our access to TV was limited and monitored.

Our parents designed the living area and yard to meet our needs.
They watched us, not TV!

Yeah, Aja! A no TV person. I agree. Have two of them unplugged and taking up space. Haven't watched for 3 years. Best investment you can make in your life and your kids!
