need ideas for updating a 35 year old cape style house.

The kitchen is OK but there is no mudroom/laundry, no first floor master and the ceilings are low ((7.8)
What are the most important feature buyer are looking for today?

Open and airy spaces. If you can remove non-load bearing walls do so. Keeping your color palette neutral (grays/taupes/cream) throughout and ample lighting will give the illusion of more space. Definitely invest in good materials and top line appliances for the kitchen as that one room can make or break a sale. Good Luck!
