Need advice for my mudroom laundry room project

ehafnerNovember 11, 2012
I have a mud room laundy room (11 ft long x 9 ft wide) with white ceramic tiles. Since day one my wife has not liked the white tiles since they show everything. We have three kids and a black lab who sheds - so there is plenty to show!
The room is not large and much of it is contained in a closet or has appliances - so our question is:
What is the best style/shape/pattern tile to use to maximize the perceived size of the room; what color or product would look good to go with the white closet door / white cabinet / white trim already in room?
We plan to build a bench/open locker wall unit where table stands as well as repaint the walls - so no need to match to the off-white color up now. Thanks!!

Suggestion;
What is the flooring adjacent to this room by the way ? But in reality it really doesn't matter.....

If you use a bigger tile, ceramic or a more durable porcelain to avoid chips, in a straight lay, like it is now, the larger tile will help the room feel bigger and is used frequently.
Tile in this case is the most durable, easy to clean and just works well in a mudroom.
In terms of color/pattern, as long as you find a tile that has a combination of white ( for a bright look ) and greys/and a bit of black running through it ( for kid shoe-boot dirt and black dog hair ) that should just about solve all your concerns.
You could also consider a diagonal lay with the larger ( exp; 20/24" tile )
Diagonal lay in a larger tile may make the room appear less skinny and long a bit.
And just just a medium grey grout, sealed, to prevent dirt accumulation.

A medium colored ceramic floor would be ideal for hiding dirt to a certain degree.

Choose a tile that looks like dirt ( swirly multi browns , taupe, flecks of grey/ black color) and go with a cocoa grout. We have this in our entry, and it never looks dirty.

Slate is beautiful. Plus, who wouldn't want to do laundry in a room like this?
