What is the minimal amount of space between kitchen island and opposite wall where the sink or cooktop would g
NYC kitchen where one wall would have counter and appliances and island would have sink. How many feet can the passthrough be (minimum). thanks!

okmrazor This'll come down to code in NYC.

Most here will roll off NKBA guidelines - but those don't necessarily apply in your micro-city world. 42-48" would be great! My guess is, it isn't going to happen.

I designed and built a kitchen for a city couple in their tiny beach house. They wanted what they wanted and insisted 32" between range and island was acceptable. I didn't think they knew what they were getting into - and they had picked expensive Everything. I built a mockup of the space in the shop, brought pots and pans in from home and had them (literally) sign off. Inspector gave no hassle when I inquired pre-build.

Once installed, it was actually okay. I wouldn't love it, but they were accustomed to a style of living (space) that I'm not.

So the answer will come down to you and NYC Building Dept.

Maletz Design I usually shoot for 36" as a minimum here in NYC. If you are designing for a kitchen with more than one cook, it's best to have 38" or 40" between your counters though, so people don't bump bottoms! Also take care that the dishwasher door doesn't block a tight aisle.

Good luck.
