If you can find something with colors you love that will be displayed in some form in this space or a nearby space, then that will be your starting point. A rug, artwork, drapery, pillows or furniture will give you a starting point. Do you want tiles or paint? Do you want shiny reflective glass or metal, or matte stone or paint? You also need to make sure the backsplash will coordinate in tones with the floor and countertop. If you have a busy countertop keep the backsplash more neutral and toned down. Search in Houzz for backsplash ideas too. Lots to choose from. Good luck.

I'd suggest this pattern, easy to keep clean too.

Glass is an option, I have seen this done, and it looks amazing! (Singular large pieces of glass) in whatever shade you want! (http://glassbacksplashpaint.com/gallery)
Classic white also adds dimension, believe it or not! Stainless steel… there are a few different designs out there if you want to just pop without dedicating an accent colour…
Just be sure not to overdo it! Some patterns & styles can be over bearing!
Here are a few ideas… I would choose a lighter colour as I have added below, just an idea, just to help with your dilemma! Good Luck, and Keep us posted with lots of photos!

Hi okijen,

How about our subway tile in Noir? http://www.granitetransformations.com/southjersey/products/mosaic-tiles/colors/subway/#!prettyPhoto[col_gall]/4/

I think the color would go great with that island you have, and it'd certainly give you that "pop" you're looking for. We have plenty of other colors in our subway line that would look great and I think some of the others above have suggested subway.

Good luck!

I think the advertisements are annoying not just this one but all of them. Since businesses are choosing to do this option of advertising, maybe they should be charged a per post rate and Houzz could donate the funds to people who are needing to rebuild from hurricane Katrina.... just a thought :)

I would go with glass or subway tiling in a color which is complementary to your granite.

Lots of options in glass tile. Here are a few examples. Can't really tell what color your granite is.

Another option that looks really nice is a classic subway. This one has a beveled edge, so it gives some dimension

You could add colour with display items like a red toaster, etc. or you could paint the backsplash a bright colour, paint is easier to change if you get sick of it. Or you could paint the cabinets, walls. They're all easier to change than tiles.

Hi okijen, do you have a closeup picture of your granite, or the specific name of the color/brand? It would help everyone give more specific suggestions for a backsplash that will complement it beautifully.

Pick up a light tone from your granite and matrch it in a very plain glossy cerammic tile. Then change your pendant lighting fixtures to something with a punch of color and some style!

Subway tiles or mosaic glass. Both perfect.
