Need advice on an interior brick wall in a dark living room!
November 15, 2012 in Design Dilemma

We are doing up my uncle's house. In the living room there is an interior brick wall that currently has a fireplace. We are going to remove the fireplace but we are not sure what to do with the brick wall. Our options seem be leave it as is. Paint it white. Plaster over it.

The room doesn't get a lot of natural light. The rest of room will be painted white.

We will be doing up the whole room including putting down hardwood floors - probably a light oak.

Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Painting it white would be a good option. Are you planning to do anything with the floor as well?

Thanks for your comment, yes we will be replacing the carpet with engineered hardwood floor - probably a light oak kind of colour.

Won't there be a hole in the wall when the fireplace is removed? If so, I would fill the hole and plaster the entire wall, except for the bookcase. But before I plastered I would see about getting electrical and cable connections on the wall so that a flat screen TV could be hung there. It might be best to just remove the bricks and start over.

What we have done: In one of our rented places there has been very rough (I mean sharp and ugly) brick wall, but our landlady would not let us change it.
She allowed us to drill some hols in between the bricks - just to support wood for plaster boards which we than painted. That was easy, cheep and reversable solution!
We were happy to remove it all when we were leaving and fill all the holes - but she asked us to let it stay since it made lounge feel lighter and more spacious..

Hi---if you're keeping all the wood trim as is---then remove the fireplace and tile right over that brick with something current and NEUTRAL---if you're willing to paint all the wood---you could paint the FP any color your heart desires. Need color inspiration if you choose the latter? A rug will greatly help... Good Luck!

Thanks for all the advice, greatly appreciated!

I think we will be painting the woodwork - skirting and door frames white.

We were thinking to replace the fireplace with a more modern flat wall hung one?

Take a look at the Dimplex 50" electric one. It's gorgeous!

Whitewashing the brick may look nice, depending on white you like. Here's a couple examples below
