Dog-friendly flooring for open area

dlcaroleNovember 15, 2012
Renovating main floor (kitchen, dining nook, great room) in Calgary. Would like one type of floor throughout but must tolerate claws of my two big dogs (90 & 60 lb) better than the current hand scrapes maple hardwood has. Northern climate so warm look and feel are important. Slick surface like laminate freaks the dogs out and we don't like the plastic look of some laminates. Ideas?

Have you checked into the porcelain wood-look tiles? They're getting great reviews from people with kids and pets. I ordered a few samples from a company in Canada (I'm in California) and they arrived the next day. I love them! The company is called Builder's Direct, if you're interested.

I agree with Olldbob (his spelling), here in the U.S. they're carried at Floor and Decor and they have a same website. The tiles come in various wood shades and shapes, more and better selection than a year ago They now really do look like wood, and I almost forgot, they come in either shiner or dull finishes. Stay warm up there in Alberta!

Thanks for the ideas. Got the 411 at a flooring store tonight and commercial grade Wicanders cork floor looks like the winner! (series 1000 tile with burled look). Wood-look tile was definitely nice looking, would require in-floor heating. Builder Direct website and pricing is amazing! Has any one ordered more than a sample from them?
