Is insulation needed in basement?

I love the look you have created with exposed beams and painted cement walls! Would love to do something like that with our basement but we have insulation in between joists overhead and a contractor told us the walls had to be insulated? is that right? we live in Northeast USA. Could we take the insulation out and do what you did? or is this a problem in our area?
