Building while keeping dogs and kids in mind
November 18, 2012 in Design Dilemma
We are about to build a new home and we love the large dark plank flooring. However, we also have a 5 year old boy and a dog that will be well over 200 pounds. What flooring will withstand that wear and tear? Also what cabinet finish? We are very traditional / French country in our style. Thank you!

Hi Ltbuell, Great question! I have always been partial to hardwood floors and I love the darker floors you see now. Having lived with a lot of hardwood, I have definitely had my fair share of scratches from kids and pets. I think part of the decision has to come from how much wear and tear are you okay with on the floor?

If you are really worried about it but still want the look of wood, maybe consider one of the tiles that looks like hardwood instead?
