Need help with family room! Furniture and new flat screen placement.
Room is 13x15 and opens into kitchen. 3 walls to work with. There's 2 - 36x63plantation shuttered windows that butt up to each other in one corner. One wall has fireplace 30 inches from one of the windows , and another window 30 inches from the fireplace ...natural divider into kitchen . Hardwood floors in both rooms. Looking for new sofas ( one sofa or 2)' as well as furniture and flat screen placement. Would like to keep 2 custom cherry pieces that look fine pushed together ( (63w x36h x 20d - each piece) in play if possible., pics show bare walls, messy kitchen, and large piece blocking shuttered window. I have a large painting (35w x 41h) that I've already taken down.

rosalie66 Why is that big giant piece of furniture blocking a window? I would have my tv mounted over the fireplace , make that the centerpiece of the room. But I would paint it white. Buy an L shaped sectional the L facing the kitchen. A long storage entertainment cabinet where the tv used to be with a mirror above it. Will make the room look bigger.

creeser Your mantle looks low enough so that I agree with rosalie in moving the tv over the fp, then you can move the large cherry cabinet from in front of the window to where the tv sits now. Would the 2 cabinets you have flanking the tv fit on either side of the fireplace? If so, you could try them there to hide any cable boxes should you move the tv. Then I'd turn the couch facing the fp, a chair on either side and then see how you like it.

C Wright Design Hi there! I think that both of the above comments are good options. I see two locations for the television. Above the fireplace, as Rosalie recommends, is one option. If you find the television too high above the fireplace (neck strain?) you could keep it on the wall where you now have it and face a new sectional the way that the sofa is now facing. We typically try to place televisions at mid-eye height when seated - and factor in the distance from the screen. In any case, I would remove the large piece from in front of the window to the left of the fireplace. Good luck and feel free to write again if this is not clear.

cscott2131 Thanks. A bit concerned with heat from fireplace and the tv with 8 ft ceilings, as well as the height of the tv causing us to look up ( that was my original idea also). I'm confused as to the placement of the sectional. With a long entertainment center where tv is now, are you saying tp put the sectional opposite the fireplace (that's where it's been until I started moving everything). I guess the entertainment center there now is too high? Btw..the big piece needs to be moved out..... What height would you recommend for entertainment storage piece?

inkwitch I take it you're getting rid of all hte furniture except the cabinets and buying new seating. Do you use the FP? or is it just there, sort of the elephant in the room?

Madeline Hi,
Is the flat screen in the room now the one that you want to work with? If it is iI would think it is too big to hang above the fireplace. My husband also thinks the heat would be bad for the television, if you do use the fireplace. It seems like the only other option because the two windows limit yours, is placing the flat screen on the wall where it now sits.

I would suggest a corner sectional rather than an L-shaped sectional. You could have equal sizes each way from the corner, for instance, 108" long, if you wanted; or you could do the L section with 108" looking across the room to the television and a longer section looking across the room to the fireplace. BTW could you advise which wall is the 15' length? I want to draw a little floor plan and try to come up with some ideas for you (since I've never been able to do it in my home!).

I have lived in my home for 12 years (held hostage here by "circumstances") and I have a problem much like yours in my family room. The big difference is that the homeowners (who only got to live in their dream home one year and were transferred) did not purchase the fireplace upgrade. So I have "room" for the fireplace (where our projection tv now sits, rather perfectly I have to admit) surrounded by shelves with huge openings, the use of which I have never figured out or come to terms with and it all drives me batty. (I miss my wood-burning fireplace so much in the winter.) My kitchen is at the other end, and the third wall is a huge glass slider, the kind with three panels and two of which slide open and disappear, with only about 30" of wall to its right.
Good luck to you, madeline

C Wright Design HI! I understand your confusion...it's difficult to describe without drawings! Yes, heat from the fireplace could be an issue with your 8"0" ceiling height, so I would rethink the idea of the television above the fireplace. I think it will be uncomfortable to watch at that height anyway. One option that looks like it would work is to keep the television on the wall where it is and get a simple sectional with the right part of the L (when facing the sectional) located in the approximate location of the sofa shown in your picture . With the sectional in this configuration you will have one "leg" of the L facing the television and the other facing the fireplace, which works well. Next you will need to get a television that is an appropriate size for viewing from that location. We typically have our clients sit in the sofa and measure the distance from their eyes (while seated) to the proposed location of the television. They then take that information with them to purchase their television. There are recommended viewing distances for different size tvs. Depending on your needs you can either wall mount a flat screen television with a long media unit below or put the television in a wall unit that fits the size of the new flat screen. If you choose the latter, I would consider designing the unit to align in height with the top of the adjacent window trim with "breathing space" on both ends. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask if this is not clear.
