Bathroom wall field tile size

Maria Graciela SteigerNovember 27, 2012
I decided to start my bathroom remodeling after many weeks of thinking it over and still have many questions. What would be the best tike size for a 3 wall shower which measures 5'10" width and is 8 ' in height. The lateral walls are 3' in depth.
the floor is a soft steel gray and decided to do a plain glossy white on the shower walls. no niches since there will be a hand held shower and a grab bar so I thought it would be too busy. Does anybody think that a splash of color( aqua) here and there on the shower wall would be ok or should i keep it clean and simple with gray shower floor and white shower walls?
Thanks a bunch

I'm quite keen on books published by Taunton Press. Here's one on tile:

Here's one of our projects that Becky wrote about that added splashes of color:

The homeowner did all of the interior design herself but hired an interior designer to help with the tile selection.

Your shower seems to be similar in size to ours. We used a rectangle tile, rather than square, that measures approx 10 x 14. With that size shower, you don't need to go small on the walls or it will look busy. As for the accent color, I would go with a gray to match your floors. Something like is used in this photo. Do a pale aqua on the walls for that spa feel.

With 3 walls and a huge shower it should be possible to put in a niche. Do you really want bottles and razors on a plastic wire rack hanging from the shower arm? One inch white pearl mosaic would be fun. If you go with it use epoxy grout.

I agree with NDCreations. We put the niche in ours and it blends so well with the wall tile and is very convenient.

Splash of color accents are always welcomed in any rooms, perhaps try it on the walls that could be easily changed in case it doesn't turn out the way you envisioned.

Hi mgsteiger!
I think your idea of adding splashes of aqua is a great one! All white and gray would be nice, but the aqua will make it more fun and inviting. I made this mosaic using the mosaic tile designer on our website. It's glossy white 1x3" subway tiles, and glossy light aqua 1x6 subway tiles. You can install them vertically or horizontally, depending on your preference. You could also do a blend that incorporates gray tiles to tie into the flooring in the shower.

All the comments are great. When I thought I picked out the field tKes and had everything set, my husband brings up this technical issue in ref to ceramic vs porcelain tiles for the shower walls. According to this article by some experts in what tile is appropriate for what , he read that the ceramic tiles are no recommended for shower walls because the coefficient of water absorption is high. Around 20 %. Whereas the porcelain has a much lower index of water absorption, less than
. 5%. I need to change my choice of semi glossglazed ceramic tile in favor of porcelain maybe polished with a bit of sheen? Any thoughts?

Have you gone to a ceramic tile showroom? We did that when shopping for our bathroom. It was a store that sold nothing but tile. They had a lot of displays using the various tile in kitchens, bathrooms, etc. The people that work there can guide you and your husband through any questions you might have. It was also great to see 'rooms' done in the tile so you know what it would look like.
