I know the vertical slatted wood below the chair rail is known as bead board, but what do you call the wider, horizontally run woodwork covering the walls above the chair rail?

Good question, it is still called beadboard, but now just horizontal beadboard, or horizontal paneling.

Thanks. Have never seen it in such a wide format. I must look for it now.

Is the novelty siding on here in sheets, tongue and groove or ship lap? I am having trouble finding it in my area that looks like this that is why I am asking. Thanks a bunch!

This looks like pine shiplap siding that's been painted. I like how the wall and cabinet lines are continuous. The carpenters did great work!

I bet, if you could not find the novelty siding, you could replicate it by laying plywood sheets on the wall, and then attaching boards horizontally, leaving equal gaps between each row of boards. Depending on the thickness of the boards, you could have them ripped in half through their meridian, thus saving having to buy twice the amount of boarding, since you are going for a look and not a structural support or weather resistant surface. Once all painted, it would read as siding. One could even paint the plywood a deep shadow color like medium charcoal grey and then paint the boarding a light color like off-white or ivory before applying them to the plywood, giving an interesting two-tone effect. Clapboard used inside is relatively inexpensive too, for beach houses and sun rooms.

German siding. Talented & have a little time? Why not just paint grey mini stripes on a cream wall to give the illusion of the boards? The effect would be the same & if you want a change down the road, lightly sand & repaint.

I am just about to do this horizontal paneling on our powder room. Home Depot has the wide set beadboard in large sheets next to the regular beadboard. I am just turning it so it is horizontal. There are also LOTS of blog tutorials online for board by board methods. Just google "horizontal paneling". Good luck! Here are a couple good ones!
