How did you get the bookshelves flush against the fireplace? -with the stone jutting in front of them?

Were the shelves built first and the fireplace was built around them? Can this effect be achieved if you already have a stone fireplace with uneven stones going around the sides all the way to the wall - and you want to add a built in bookshelf?

You could add a bookshelf after the fact - you would want to locate the stone facade product that matches the fireplace, "age it" so it matches and add it in sporadically on the side to blend it.
