Need better light for sewing/office area.
Have two recessed lights over a roughly 17 X 8 ft area. I need better lighting for cutting/sewing quilts, as I am getting shadows now. Have thought of replacing two recessed lights with two oak-trimmed fluorescents to match beams. Traditional home. Any other suggestions?

Linda Have you considered track lighting?

Btw, that sewing room looks way too neat and tidy. Your work table is a great size and you still have one wall to fill with samples or other artwork...I'm jealous!

malachi267 Thanks! Work table is old dining table with blocks installed under the legs to give the right height for me to cut! Yea! I used to have to take apart sewing projects every time we had company. Haven't found any track lights that I am overly fond of yet..... and I don't want lights that are too directed or in-your-face spots. Also track centered over the current recessed light will still leave the edges unlighted. Appreciate your response!

defever I quilt too! The lighting in my space was poor so hubby bought me a 4' 4 bulb florescent fixture with the day light white bulbs and the clear, prism cover. It replaced a single ceiling light. The room is now so bright that I almost need sun glasses! If you go with a florescent fixture, having the oak on the ends would be ok, but don't get one that is trimmed in oak -- you will end up blocking the light that would otherwise go out towards the sides. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of my new light, but here's a shot of my little (and I do mean "little") quilting room. So whatcha quilting? :-)

I quilted for years and I know how wonderful it is to work in a shadow-free studio. I have an industrial style pendant over my work table which has a T150 halogen light in it. It's about ten years old and I don't know off-hand where I'd find a replacement for it.

I did find this one from Restoration Hardware which comes in various sizes and takes up to a 150 watt incandescent. Mounted directly over your work table this would cast all the light down onto the table top, and not give you any glare from the sides.

malachi267 Thank you so much for your insights! I am working on a quilt for my daughter's mom-in-law now, part of which you see laid out in the first picture. Daughter is a much faster scrapbooker than I so she is scrapbooking for me and I am quilting for her. Love our new house. It is an old one (1978) but has two (!) 17x22' living rooms. Hubby supported me in appropriating half of one of them for computer/sewing/card making/scrapbooking. I am working on getting my inventory of projects down (!) to the space that I have. The other half of the sew area is below.
