If you are keeping the rug: remove the shelving and paint the paneling the same color as the rug in a satin finish. Install a mantel over the brick. New fireplace screen will add a lot. To the right of the fireplace put a chest and mirror above it and run four or five black framed photos across the mantel. I like the idea of just covering the brick with a clean white look. Is that just drywall? I also like the beautiful cherry wood paneling going horizontally. Thanks for the link!

I think the Heath ceramics for FP look fabulous for the mid-century look.

What about a long, narrow white tile, installed in a straight-set? It will definitely work for Mid Century Modern. It would provide clean lines and a nice offset to the colors you want to incorporate.

86 the paneling and try covering that fireplace with a beautiful high gloss porcelain linear tile. Emser tile has a new product called peninsula that would looke great on that fireplace. http://emser.com/index.php?name=PENINSULA(TM)&id0=go_linear&id1=collectionDetailsIntro&index=54&scrollMenugo_linear=0
