If you are keeping the rug: remove the shelving and paint the paneling the same color as the rug in a satin finish. Install a mantel over the brick. New fireplace screen will add a lot. To the right of the fireplace put a chest and mirror above it and run four or five black framed photos across the mantel. You have an amazing opportunity to really create something special. There are limitless ideas that you could do with your fireplace wall. Look through fireplaces on this site and it will blow your mind. Here are two that I like, Warm Contemporary Dakota Fireplace

I like the idea of just covering the brick with a clean white look. Is that just drywall? I also like the beautiful cherry wood paneling going horizontally. Thanks for the link!

I think the Heath ceramics for FP look fabulous for the mid-century look.

What about a long, narrow white tile, installed in a straight-set? It will definitely work for Mid Century Modern. It would provide clean lines and a nice offset to the colors you want to incorporate.

86 the paneling and try covering that fireplace with a beautiful high gloss porcelain linear tile. Emser tile has a new product called peninsula that would looke great on that fireplace. http://emser.com/index.php?name=PENINSULA(TM)&id0=go_linear&id1=collectionDetailsIntro&index=54&scrollMenugo_linear=0
