Counter to bottom cabinet height

Are there any professionals who can tell me the standard opening from the top of the counter to the bottom of the upper cabinets.

Our current opening is 16 1/8"

18" is standard but anything between 16" and 20" is acceptable. It is a personal preference. In my kitchen I have a 20" clearance. I like the extra height for appliances. I also have an above the range microwave/range hood and I like them mounted even with the bottom of the cabinets. I cook with large pots so this gives me plenty of space to cook.

Interiors Int'l is right that 18" is the standard, but as Int Int'l says, that can vary somewhat.

If the design includes light rail, then definetly it cannot be less than 18"
