Hi eamtn05!
Good move on painting the brass. What I would do next is replace that dingy white tile. Your floors are beautiful, and the soft green on the walls is really nice. I would choose a smaller tile, in a white or a creamy yellow. The tiles below are from our site, and they are ocean style bottle glass, which has a rough edge to it which gives each tile more visual interest. Then I would paint that wooden mantle white.

I agree on painting the brass. I'm just getting ready to do that on a new old house I have. Granite or slate tile would look good. It depends on the rest of the room and if you are in an earthy palette or a light palette. If you're in the lighter palette then I think Susan's advice good. The spacing is weird. Too much space below the fireplace and too little above. When you tile you can add tile above to even it out and I would add decorative blocks to the bottom of the mantel to bring it to the appropriate level. Add a slab of granite or a slate tile hearth to the floor in front of the fireplace. Uncut slabs aren't that expensive and that would help raise the mantel and protect your floor. If you tile a plywood section with slate you could make it whatever height you want to even out the fireplace. You have to mind your traffic flow with the size of the hearth so as not to have people falling or tripping over it. You can mix the slate and granite from or use all of one or the other.
