We installed lovely hardwood floors and want to keep them that way for as long as possible. What is the best vacuum (Manufacturer and model) that won't scratch them? Is upright or canister better?

This is very subjective everybody likes different things for different reasons. Dyson, Shark and Dirt Devil are all good choices. I personally am a very lazy house keeper and would never give up my I-robot Rumba. It is programmable and docks itself to recharge. All I have to do is empty it. I frankly am waiting for them to make one that does that too.

Dyson is what many of our clients use. They have several models now that you can choose from.

You'll want a vacuum that can turn off the beater bar so it doesn't spin. Check to see how low the lowest setting is to the floor. With suction only, this will be important. Finally, check that all of the wheels are a cushioned plastic, not a hard plastic. Those were the things on my checklist when I purchased a vacuum; it was a Sears Kennmore Progressive canister. I like it a lot and is gentle on the wood. Models have changed since then but the Progressive still exists.

I like a good model of Hoover. They have been durable for us and have carpet and floor settings.
