Paint or Refinish floors first?

What should be done first, painting the walls/trim or re-finishing/re-staining floors?

Do your walls first, that way if you drop stuff on your floors you will be redoing them anyway

I agree that I would paint the walls first and then have the floors done, with the agreement that the painters will return to do any necessary touch-ups.

Defnitely paint walls first, then do floors. Standard painter's contract provides for return to do touchup after floors are done.

What about dust getting all over the walls? Still paint first?

floors first! especially if you're painting woodwork/trim. we had our floors done and then i painted the trim. the trim would have been all knicked up from the sanding/buffing equiptment had i painted first.

Professionals paint the walls first. A professional floor finisher should have a device that doesn't allow the dust to escape. Ten years ago this may have been a problem but the walls were dusted off easily. Any knicks to the woodwork can easily be handled.Even floors that we have re-done because of wear over the years have had the walls done first but if you're really worried about the baseboard knicks and you're doing it yourself, just leave the baseboard until after the floor is done.

If you don't have baseboard installed, paint it while the other trim is being painted then install and touch up after flooring is finished. Otherwise, we remove the shoe molding before working on the floors and then either reinstall or replace when the floors are done.
