Kitchen island pendant lighting.

Is there any king of a standard height when installing pendant lights over a kitchen island? I thought i read something like 36" something like that. Also in the dining room were hanging a chandelier over an expanding table which is 30" high from the floor. I know that a lot has to do with how bright the lights are and how much area you expect the lights to cover. Any advice would be great.

30-36" over the work surface usually. But really it's a personal preference.

How tall are the cooks in your home? My husband is 6'4 and loves to cook, so we'll be installing out pendant higher than "normal" to adjust for his height.
