What material for hallway? Carpet or tile... Please help.

We have a 2500 sq ft ranch house with a hallway that has seen better days. The main living areas/kitchen are hardwood. This wood is out of stock and I don't want to try to match it (I can't get close enough). So i have 2 options: 1. Re-carpet the hall and bedrooms. Or 2. Tile the hall and bathrooms. I was thinking of small tiles in a pattern.
