Need help on what to do with the fireplace wall. I'm thinking thick cushions on both sides of fireplace on the hearth. The mantel is shallow and runs the length of the wall. What else to do to break it up? Also wondering about paint. Thanks!!

I'd continue the creamy yellow that is on the wall behind the blue sofa. A beefier mantle with some chunky wooden curved supports under it would look nice. I wouldn't put pillows there unless you really plan to use them. How about a pretty plant on one side and some tall pretty colorful bottles on the other?

I agree that you could add a rough large wood mantle with supports, This will give you character and architectural interest.
