Covered Outdoor kitchen

oceankids04December 31, 2012
We are hoping to put in a covered outdoor kitchen (grill, power-burner, sink, and fridge) with granite and a seating area. I am wondering if anyone has any advice or suggestions?

I love outdoor kitchens! Wish I had the space... is there anything specifically that you want advice or suggestions for? All your ideas so far sound good to me!

Here are a few tips.

I'm not saying we haven't done it before, but if you look closely at the installation manuals for most (if not all) outdoor grills, they will prohibit installation under combustible construction. So a covered outdoor kitchen is probably going to be illegal, believe it or not, at least in the USA.

Having said that, one of the best things you can do is to think seriously about how you will actually use the space and visualize yourself in it. Deborah Krasner's book "The New Outdoor Kitchen" is a great planning resource.

Leave yourself about 18" on each side of the grill to land platters, etc. A good landing spot is especially important on the side opposite your dominant hand.

Locate your undercounter refrigerator so guests won't have to squeeze past the cook to get something out of the fridge.

Locate the grill away from the seating area so as not to subject your guests to excessive smoke.

If you have a windy area, consider installing a backsplash of some kind to protect your cooking equipment from the wind.

There are a lot of little things to consider. Trust someone who has built a few outdoor kitchen to help you with your design. Most of us have made a lot of expensive mistakes and can help you to not make too many yourself.

Grante or tile for counters. And you will need a giant, high flow, expensive vent a hood if you expect to grill under any roof. Or you will run yourself out of the space during the initial heat up of the grill. Smoke ain't no joke!

We ended up using honed granite and love it.
