Looking for advice on kitchen nook

Hi All! I am looking for any suggestions on the kitchen nook area. I am thinking of creating a corner seating with some storage (I have a 3 year old, so would like her to do the crafts at that table - she would not spend time in her room, and this will hopefully keep her busy while I am cooking) and adding a couple of shelves in the niche above the table. Plus, any suggestions on the light fixture? That area is quite dark (the kitchen opens to a living room with big sliding doors/windows, but the kitchen itself has zero windows), but I don't like that hanging light fixture. So I would like to either replace it with something modern, or maybe look at other light options (wall lights? not sure they will give enough light though).
Due to the lack of windows, I was also thinking of another option - destroying the wall (or part of it) - where the niche is - and creating bar-type eat area. There is a dining room on the other side, and I am hoping there will be more light when the wall goes away. I have not convinced myself yet that it's a good idea to break through the wall, so it will be hard to convince my husband :) Your advice will be appreciated.
