The patio surface in this photo is a natural slate tile set on top of a concrete slab. Your local stone and tile suplier should have numerous slate tile options for you to select from.

I love this deck and this is almost exactly what I am looking for as an addition to my home. The exception is that I would like it free standing. Is that possible?

free standing is possible but it require support footings at all bearing points.
