Resubmitting this question. I was hoping for an answer by tomorrow.
The home is 2076 sq ft and the kitchen, LR, dining room and front hall are open......should I paint all the walls the same color. Or different shades of taupe?
Linda I suggest either painting them alike or painting them different. Don't try to straddle the fence by painting them almost alike and then have to try to remember which can is for which wall.
Paint them all the same shade now and after you've lived there 6 months to a year, then decide what colors you would like to change.
Chroma Design Slight changes in taupe on different walls of an open floor plan will be hardly noticable. Your eye will perceive it as basic shadowing. Paint it all one color with the intention of adding accent walls in the future when you lived in the space a while. Coordinate your accent colors with your furnishings and/or accessories.
charchuck I cannot thank you enough. Big decision by tomorrow. Doing, floors, kitchen cabinets, walls all by the same contractor and tomorrow was "P" day. Thank you. I'm new to the site. My next exploration is going to be appliances, but down the line. Copied one of the kitchen's cupboards on this site. How long has houzz been around?
charchuck One more question in regard to painting......the ceiling! If I am using a Restoration medium taupe should I paint the ceiling the same color or would you all go lighter? If so the same color as the trim and doors which is a complimentary creamy white or a lighter shade of taupe? I find your replies so relieving.
Deborah Butler, Brickwood Builders I would use the same as the wall color diluted to 50% for the ceiling. Keeps the same tone, but is not quite so dark.
Chroma Design I would paint the ceiling a complementary off white. Complementary does not necessarily mean another version of taupe, although you can. I would not do another taupe. This will give you the most flexibility when you add accent colors in the future. Taupe, even a lighter version, may look drab, but a soft, non-stark white will be fresh looking. I don't know restoration colors so I can't advise. But from Ben Moore, something like OC 85 mayonnaise or white dove.
Same for the trim. But here, think white dove is best.
alicekevin I agree with the above comment. We just had our open concept LR, kitchen, tv room, dining room painted ...ceiling color is all the same and it looks great. Trim and ceiling are the same color. Walls flow from a cream in one room to a parchment color and looks great.
charchuck Today is the day, so the force be with me. I tend to be indecisive at the last minute. But this is definitely all good advice and when I meet with the painter that will be the final. And I like the mayonnaise.....its a chip I'm holding as well. That was an affirmation for the trim. I saw many kitchens that I like for cupboards. Can't seem to get the name for Creamy cabinets with a glaze. That's being decided today as well. Do any of you know?
