outdoor fireplace or firepit?

We are designing an outdoor space. We will have an outdoor kitchen and also want to have a fireplace. Now I'm wondering if a fire pit would be better so people can sit all the way around it.
I do like the idea of a fireplace so your not dealing with the smoke so much.

Hi ladies...I am going to let you think about another option. Do you want the fireplace for ambiance or are you looking to entertain or make it something functional? In the past, I had a fireplace in my courtyard and soon realized that we never used it. If we did, we certainly did not get heat from it unless we were sitting on the wall. It was pretty for sure, but that was about it. I would recommend a gas fire table instead...no smoke, ashes, or embers to annoy the neighbors. Plus, you will sit around it for hours in comparison to a fireplace. People will sit around it and feel the heat, set their drinks on the side or appetizers, or whatever. You can even move it around and place it in areas where you want your guests to be or take it with you with you decide to move. Here are some examples -http://www.allbackyardfun.com/fire-pit-tables/gas-fire-tables. In addition, it is easy to turn off and on and you don't have to worry about making sure the fire goes out. Functional & Beautiful to look at.

I have a fireplace and next time it will be a pit. A pit many can sit around and enjoy the fire...with the fireplace in cold evenings we are all standing on the hearth. Pit is the way to go.

Pit. Keep it low to the ground and befriend someone who works with kiln dried wood which burns hotter with less stinky smoke. Your husband hasn't won this battle yet.

We have a fireplace and I love it. In the summer I put lit candles in it .
