Need help in family room
Awkward room shape with different widths. The room has 4 windows on the wall adjacent to the fireplace. This is also the widest part of room. The wall opposite of windows has a short angled wall (sofa is on this wall currently). Behind the sofa is a walkway/entry way to the kitchen area. There is also a counter top with barstools.

We are having difficulty arranging our furniture. We have lived here 3 yrs and have rearranged many times and cannot come up with an arrangement we like. We would also like to put down and area rug. Not sure where and how it should be place. My first thought would be under/in front of sofa and loveseat, but if I do this then the area in front of the windows will feel even more separate.

decoenthusiaste An area rug should be centered on the focal point which is your FP/TV area. Have you ever put the small sofa in the bay with that coffee table and the two chairs on the short angled wall with the side table? I think that might work. Your mirror over the FP is a tad small and your other art too high. Rue of thumb is that art should visually attach to a piece of furniture (5-8" above it.) Free floating pieces should have their center point at 60" above the floor. When you move the two chairs, try the small tulip prints above the side table and only 2 inches apart. Make sure they hang below the top of the lamp if you use it (I think the lamp is too small though.) Your orange accent colors looks good. Try to find a rug with that and chocolate. Are you planning for window treatments?

Becky H Thank you for your ideas. I have put the small sofa in the bay. The only reason we haven't kept it there is because if you center it on the windows then the other sofa needs to be pushed back closer to the kitchen making the walkway much more narrow (see pic). Would you recommend pulling the furniture away from the windows?

WIth the 2 chairs on the short wall there is only room for 1 small table.
I agree about the mirror, I have just been trying to wait until I find something I really love. The reason the art is so high is our ceilings are 10' so there is still over 3' of wall space above the top of the highest picture. Still lower them? I know they are small, I just loved the colors. I wasn't sure I understood where you said to move them.

Yes I would like window coverings eventually. The room tends to be dark with all the dark would and blinds so I am hoping for something to bring color in the room without making it darker.

adrimama Hi! You have a nice space, and I love your wall and mantle color. I just wanted to ask, do you need all the seating which you have? If you do need all of it, then this is what I would try first. First, I would move the TV over the mantle where the mirror is currently. That way, at least you have one taller focal point versus the current two. This would allow you to anchor your living area within the fireplace and window area with a large area rug.

I would place the large couch on window side perpendicular to the fireplace. I would then flip the small couch to mirror the other couch also perpendicular to the fireplace on the other side.

Where you have the TV currently, I would add floating wall shelves with decorative items and photos. On the wall that is opposite of the windows, I would add a nice chest or bureau and place a large picture frame over that or groupings of pictures. One of the arm chairs could then stay next to the chest as a sitting/reading nook area.

I hope you get it all figured out! Good luck!

Jayme Hobbs Have u tried loveseat in bay, sofa on opposite wall/chairs with backs to kitchen area?

decoenthusiaste There is no problem with pulling the sofa out of the bay a bit. You have plants to fill in behind it. You might prefer the larger sofa in the bay, the smaller one floating out from the angled wall and the two chairs facing the FP as Jayme suggested. As long as there is 24" of walk space between the sofa and the stools at the bar you are ok. I do like the last pics you posted. My suggestion for the small tulips was to anchor them with the end table when you put it between the chairs. You and your furniture live in the first 6-8 feet of the space so don't worry about anything above that. Unfortunately, it is just excess and looks good but serve little purpose except to increase the spacious appearance.

Jayme Hobbs Oh..now I see the wall I said to put sofa on is prob. too small for that! Sorry!! Deco's last suggestion sounds pretty good!

Becky H Thank you everyone. I appreciate the feedback and suggestions. The long sofa in the bay doesn't work well b/c it takes up much of the space which is fine except that the width for the rest of the room is not the same. Whatever we would have backing up to the kitchen would be cutting into the sofa, in other words we wouldn't be able to put the chairs back far enough.
Andrimama the TV above the fireplace unfortunately is not an option. Our mantle is very high at 5'6" so the TV be too high for the space. I wish it was an option.
