need help with stain color for stairs

We'll have the stairs refinished soon and I don't know what color to stain them (if staining it's a good idea). They go from main floor foyer to second floor. On main floor living room we have dark walnut color maple floor, and in the foyer and kitchen we have teracotta (orange-brown) tile floor. The stairs are oak, currently natural color. I was told that the oak won't stain as the maple so I am afraid we're going to end up with 3 floor/ stairs colors visible in the foyer.
Also, any suggestions if I should stain only the steps/ steps and raisers/ steps and raisers and sides? I am afraid that staining the sides will make the foyer too dark, however, the living room is modern and I think paining only the steps would make the staircase and foyer look too "traditional". Any ideas would help. Thanks

You might consider painting the risers, wall-stringer and outer stringer the same color as your trim then stain the tread a color as close to the walnut as you can manage. I think it would be a good compromise that will compliment the modern direction of the rest of your home, but still allow the wood to shine. And you'd only have two "floor" colors upon entry.

I am in total agreement with Manon. This is the look I chose for my stairs when we repainted recently. Really lightens the space

I couldn't have found a better pic than that to describe what I would do in your place.

The railings with exposed fasteners are dating this staircase. I would invest in having a wood capped handrail over top.

Hi
Here is a set of stairs I came across on Houzz:- it might not be what you are looking for but it offers some alternative design ideas and another perspective!

Thank you for your comments. Keep them coming. Re: the railing, we removed the yellow plastic cover and we're going to have a wood handrail instead. That's why you can see the fasteners right now.

I just noticed that the walls look pink-ish in the pictures. They are light gray on the entire main floor.
