Need help from where to start
January 20, 2013

We have just bought a new home and would like to design it ourselves but don't know from where to start... There are so many different ideas out there it is overwhelming at times. Do you have any advice or pointers on how to make a home look good without using a designer? I have started browsing through this website and it is indeed helpful however any additional guidance would be most appreciated.

Many thanks in advance :)))

I would start by defining my style - rustic? contemporary? cottage? And then by choosing a set of colors I love, and using the 60-30-10 guideline. 60% of the primary color, then 30 for the secondary color and 10 for accents. So if you like the colors gray, black and red, you would do 60% gray, 30% black and 10% red. Does that make sense? If you have an open floor plan, it's best to keep the colors consistent. If you have medium gray walls in one room you should have gray walls in an attached room, but the color can be reduced by 50% to add interest.

Great tips from olldbobbi. It's all about having a consistent theme throughout the house once you've a style that you like.

The info that olldbobbi posted is spot on. However it can still be a daunting task. Using a Designer isn't an expensive thing. We can in many cases save you money and frustration. I have had so many come to me after buying something that didn't work and then they were stuck with it. (money not well spent) You can hire one by the hour to guide you. That way you do the running around and deal with the subs or DIY it and still get a professional look. Have fun and enjoy your new home.
