My bedroom needs updating. It has very few usable walls and the bedroom set has to stay. It opens directly into a bathroom that will get remodeled in about 2 months. We removed the floral wallpaper from the bedroom and painted it but that can change. I need ideas for softening the plantations shutters without blocking them as there is a sliding glass door to the patio.
decoenthusiaste Well, the furniture is really dating your room and crowding it too. Any chance you can take apart the bed and use the two cabinets alone or even in other bedrooms? Can you remove the mirror from the dresser and get something new to replace it that doesn't eat up the wall? Would you be willing to paint this furniture? Is the curio in the bathroom for your jewelry, whatnots, or bathroom essentials and linen?
favoritegram Its not as crowded as the picture shows. I can take the mirror off the dresser, not a problem. Not sure my Husband would go for painting the set. I would love to replace it but with remodeling 3 bathrooms, the expense might overwhelm him, LOL The curio in the bathroom holds part of my Perfume Bottle collection but will go when we do that bath over.
ziggylovesgus This is a difficult space to work with. The furniture eats up the room, so if you could maybe repaint it white that would help. You really need a new bed spread. The mirror behind the bed really opens up the space, but the mirror on the dresser has to go. Actually, if you could scrap the dresser altogether and move the chair to where the dresser is that would help. The wall across from the windows should be painted a vibrant color, but this will only work if the cabinets are white. Be sure to let the room feel yours, and to have it fit in with the rest of your house. As for the windows, not much can be done. I would just get blinds that pull up all the way. not ones that are attached to the door's bottom, that is if you can't get rid of them. Natural light really modernizes rooms. Here are some pictures:
favoritegram Thanks, the wall across from the windows is where the double doors that open to the hallway are so not much wall. There is also a highboy that may not show too well on the wall to the right of the bathroom opening. The chaise lounge could go or stay, It is only a dumping place for my husbands clothes.
2dogssashatess i would suggest you get rid of the stuffed toys on top of the cupboards.Looks cluttered and like a kid's clothes otherwise. The chaise lounge should go, as room looks cluttered. Would also get rid of the whatnot in the other corner. The mirror on the dresser is terrible and should go. new manchester for the bed is esential as the current looks nana ish
mapeggy favoritegram, I hate to say this but the bedroom furniture must go. I remember having a similar set in 1970. That was over 40 years ago. You have gotten your money's worth. Let it go. Since you are remodelling your bathroom it is difficult to give advice without knowing what you will be doing. It looks like you have two walk in closets now. Will that change? Also bathroom doorways this size are a thing of the past. Narrow the entrance way to 4' wide and install two 2' double doors (glass or solid whatever you like). Your vanity area is OK... just needs repainting and nice hardware. Or refacing, but no need to replace whole unit. Probably needs new sinks and faucets. The full mirror must go. Two individual mirrors would be more stylish. Assuming you will have either one big closet or still two walk ins... take the bed apart and use the side storage (and highboy) along one wall inside your closet. If there is enough room you can also put the dresser inside as well with clothes hanging above. Otherwise, I would customize your closets and have drawers built in. The mirror over the bed, must be replaced by a nice headboard. Preferably one that is upholstered in a neutral fabric. Then get shams and bedspread/duvet cover to coordinate with headboard colours. Chaise can be reupholstered in another fabric which should 'pop' and give life to your room. Put it where dresser currently is. If you really hate the California shutters cover with drapery which pulls back on both sides or just one side depending what side of the slider you patio exit is. But first ask yourself, Do I use this exit regularly? Is there another exit I can use? If there is another exit, then install regular draperies which hang from a rod approximately 8" - 12" above the patio door trim. If you despise the shutters install sheer drapery on a track under the over drapes. But leave the shutters in place for room darkening purpose.
favoritegram Thanks for all the advice. We purchased this set new in 1989. The things above the headboard are my Factice Perfume bottle collection I can take the couple of stuffed toys down. We are planning on gutting the bathroom completely as the 2 walk in closets are so narrow there is hanging space only on one side. and were customized when we bought the house 9 years ago. They are still way too small. We are planning on pushing the back wall where the vanity is out 6 feet at least. If I can talk my Husband int replacing the set, I will. I agree it is out of style but if not I will see about having it painted to a wood tone like pecan.
