Need help with laundry room countertop? Price friendly
January 23, 2013 in Design Dilemma
We are redoing our laundry room. I am using flat front white cabinets with contemporary polished nickel hardware. I would like a light grey countertop that can be cut thick and have square edges. I do not know much about formica and if you can do this with the product? I cannot use marble or granite because it is too expensive.

Formica (the generic term is plastic laminate) is making a come back. It is a very durable, inexpensive counter top material and it comes in many colors and patterns. I think this is a good choice for a laundry room. One can do a thickened square edge easily with very little added cost.

Do you have any suggestions for laundry room flooring? I would like something neutral that would go with white and grey but also durable....

Have you looked at remnant pieces of marble or granite? Sometimes, when there is not much left of one lot of stone, slab galleries will sell pieces at discounted prices to get rid of the stone. We have a fairly large remnant selection, and I would assume that your local slab gallery will as well. At remnant pricing, stone can be pretty comparable to the price of Formica. I know that I am unaware of the square footage that you need, but I thought that I would throw the idea out there :)

For the flooring I would look at Marmoleum by Forbo. It is a sheet material made from cork and linseed oil-a natural product. This is your basic linoleum but this manufacturer makes a endless array of color combinations.
