There are gold accent tiles in my kitchen. Can they be painted?

I have read people paint them, but they are not scrubbable.

olldj22 is right. Paintable, but not scrubbable. Like a painted glass, which is actually very similar to what it would be. The tile is ceramic and is painted with a colored sand called glaze. Then it's fired and the sand melts to form a thin layer of glass over the surface.
