Gray fireplace color

Hello, I love the gray color around this fireplace. Has this fireplace front been painted? If so how do I achieve the "slate" look?

The immediate surround at the firebox is a stone tile. The hearth face and the vertical element on the right are Viroc, a composite wood-cement panel product.

This was an existing fireplace that was re-faced by the general contractor and his tile sub. The GC was Buildmax. POC is Chris at buildmax.chris@verizon.net.
