Living room help

Kevin BoudreauJanuary 27, 2013
I have a very plain and drab living room space in my apartment. I was wondering if anyone has some simple ideas to spruce up the place. So far all I have is some Christmas lights. Thanks in advance!

How about a graphic colorful rug to start, art and curtains.

Is there any way you could come up with a small budget for new furniture? A little can go a long way if spent right.

Yes sir! I can re-arrange the living room however I want. I can't buy new furniture due to fire codes. I'm hoping for a budget of less than $100.

pull them to the where the sofa is ....9" - 12" from the wall side be side....and turned in toward each other....leave about 20" between them for the great looking midcentury table you will find at the resale shop

GARY FINLEY, ASID... I think you should take pitty on me too................. I am a college grad. ( ok that was 2o some years ago but) hey I live close to you and I will buy you a pizza and some beer if you paint my house !! Sorry just having fun.

when I was in college back in the cave man days ( as my son would say) I recall lots of cheap furniture that was collected from others who get rid of stuff as the move or throw things out. In fact if you went to same estate sales or even looked in the garbage of some rich people ( like the ones who live in Laguna Beach) and throw away nice sh--t. I bet you could get great stuff that way. Just a thought

$100 is plenty....I have 2 boys with great spaces, and some furniture I envy, they got for $10 or free. You're a student....where are the art posters....music, political, subversive, whatever...get them on the walls. Or, any ethnic area where you can pick up fabric for wall hangings to add a splash of color?
Are you in a city where people leave out furnishings for the taking, or check out Craig's list....goodwill...thrift shops....pick a color scheme then see what you can find...definitely a few pillows, perhaps bed pillows with covers made (cheap and big enough for the guys to use on the floor)....a little time...swap things out as you encounter better cast offs and it wil come together.

But I want to spend the money on the cabinets and the wood floor and the labor. Ok I will give you $100 if you can come up with a cohesive color scheme and adress how to get a new ikea kitchen plus a wood and tile floor to cover 2000 sq feet. Finish my fireplace and get a chandilier. we can talk through my idea book is you like to look at them and maybe see if you have any idea.

Kevin.............. If you were closer I could GIVE you a buch of stuff I have in the garage i dont need. You really should just go to some garage sales and you will be amazed what you can get. I sell stuff to college kids all the time really cheap.

If you're interested in drapes, one place to check is J.C. Penny, for reasonable prices. Would find drapes you like in a pattern with some color and take a color from there - a light one for the paint color. If you want to brighten it up, a light orange or turquoise might be colors to consider - find drapes with these colors then eg a light paint color connected. On a budget, you can check out flea markets, secondhand stores and craigslist. Your friend's ideas for a coffee table looks pretty effective though kind of labor intensive. So would definitely add to your list of things to pick up as well as an area rug. You can do a photo gallery of photos you like as well as possible art. Re the beer, I remember my brother's college dorm project was creating a beer can collection of different beers that they had imbibed. Quite colorful, in a pyramid shape. Kind of unstable as a piece of furniture though! Good luck with your studies!

I sent you an email gary... I was kinda looking for free advice. I am sure your worth it and its a great offer. My fear is that you will leave and I will be just as confused or that your vision and mine wont be the same. Have you done houses in my area? Have you done very modern interiors and do you think I can even get what I desire for the money I have? I dont think I have enough? Do you? If I had enough to do what I envision and want than I would pay someone to make it happen. My fear is that you will say you only can do one or the other so I will kinda be back to square one minus 250. You can email me if you would like to help via email and chat. I dont want to waste your time otherwise.

to my point earlier Kevin is open to change. This is a prime opportunity for an open minded person to find have to best spend 20K .... 20k Is a great deal of money, but not to replace cabinets/counter tops/floor......I just ran numbers for a small house in Irvine.... I ran the numbers to do what you want for my house in Laguna Beach the kitchen is 9 x 10 I couldnt do it for less than 19K and that was 9 years ago....

A professional considers the whole picture, and often the solutions due to the budget are different than the client originally ask to have. better to have a completed project that is somewhat adjusted from the original idea.....than a half done job STOPPED dues to unforseen over runs

Well I did give you some advice if you read what I said.............regarding the estate and garage sales. plus the question about the fire codes? what did you mean by that? what area do you live in ? Do you have ikea? great for low cost student decor. are you in an off campus appartment? What have your other college friends done ? maybe get ideas from them? family? ask them to donate un-used items to you for your place. ok hope i helped.

Kevin, we live in different countries so I have no idea if Ikea there has reasonable prices like it does here, but in my experince they have reasonably priced throws for the sofa (well, actually bigger than a throw but cant recall the name for it) and that may help with your decor.
@Gary Finley: I think its great that a professional is willing to give advice for free to those of us whose budget wouldnt be enough to go and see a pro...I've seen your comments on others posts and they have always seemed quite helpful to me
